What to do if life circumstances get in the way of achieving a goal

No one is immune from unforeseen life circumstances. And it is very frustrating when they prevent you from achieving the goal you have set for yourself.

But still, you should not give up and put your dreams on hold. There are several ways to move towards what you want, despite the fact that life makes adjustments to your plans.

Reconsider your approach to helping others

It is not uncommon for us to get distracted from our goals to make other people's lives better. We say “yes” when we want to say “no”, or we slip into the abyss of pleasing others.

But this approach to life is just a way to delay getting what we want, sometimes even forever. And while it's great that you are able to support others, you should not forget about yourself.

Remember that your needs, goals, and priorities are just as important. It can be hard to say no to those who rely on your support and to change your approach to helping others. But think about it: would you be happy if you lived your life not for yourself, but for those around you?

It's time to find out if there are people around you who are trying to take advantage of you - you need to start saying no to them first. You also need to say no more often when you feel like your task list is already overflowing.

Sure, it can be scary to disappoint other people or to see them unhappy with your answer. However, achieving your own goals is definitely worth it if you put yourself first every once in a while.

Optimize your schedule

It's hard to move according to a previously created plan when life makes adjustments. And if you try to stick to what you've planned despite sudden circumstances, you can become frustrated, burned out, and feel helpless.

Always optimize your schedule to avoid stress and negative feelings. Learn to be flexible and develop adaptability so that unexpected obstacles don't grow into a huge mountain on the way to your goal.

And also learn to manage your time, and the first thing you need to do for that is to prioritize your tasks and start doing them with the one you feel is the most important. Of course, from time to time your schedule will be “wedged” and others, but focusing on the first goal always pays off.

In order not to forget about it, write it down in your daily planner or on a post-it note that you stick in a visible place. This will make it easier for you not to forget about it in the hustle and bustle of life.

Set boundaries in your business to fight distractions

There are always plenty of distractions around us that prevent us from moving towards our goal. They may be almost imperceptible, but they can take up a lot of time and energy.

To combat them, you need to set boundaries for yourself when it comes to doing things that will help you achieve what you want.

Allocate yourself time to do them, resolve not to answer calls and texts until you've completed them. And it's also important to make sure you have a place where no one will bother you, and think about what you should give up in favor of moving forward.

Try to figure out what went wrong

Life's unforeseen circumstances knock us off our feet, but how we react to them is up to us. If everything seems to be going downhill, you need to stop and think about what went wrong.

Reflect on what it was that threw you off track in the circumstances. What habits may have gotten in the way of your goals? Or maybe you were trying to accomplish too many things at once that proved too difficult?

These are examples of questions to ask yourself to get to the bottom of why life circumstances are keeping you away from your goals. Once you realize what obstacles are in your way, it will be easier to adapt to them and reconsider your approach to achieving what you want.

Don't put it off

A big mistake that many people make is that they freeze and wait for life circumstances to work out in such a way that achieving a goal will be easy and enjoyable.

But the longer you wait for that moment, the sooner you realize that it may not come. Procrastination is often the cause of failure and great regret.

Even if unforeseen life circumstances make you nervous, try to set aside time to think about how to move toward your goal in spite of them. You may have to make drastic changes to your way of thinking, habits, social circle, and schedule - it's important to get to it right away, without putting the change off until later.

The sooner you can adapt to what has happened to you, the sooner you can get your life on track and get back on the path to your goal.

Ask for help

Asking for help can be very difficult, especially if you're always used to relying only on yourself. But it may just be necessary when life circumstances throw you off track and prevent you from moving toward a goal you've set for yourself.

Sometimes help isn't about someone taking on some of your responsibilities or doing some work. Even a simple heart-to-heart talk with a friend or advice from someone who has been through the same struggles can be the starting point for new motivation and the realization that giving up isn't worth it.

Decide how to move forward

There are times when life circumstances throw you so out of whack that you sit there not knowing what to do next. Regardless of the situation, you have four choices: return to the goal, revise, delete or replace it.

If you realize that you are still passionate about what you were aiming for, try to learn from past mistakes and return to your goal, trying to change your life so that circumstances are not a hindrance to achieving it.

It may be that the goal seems attractive to you, but still you feel that there is something wrong with it. In this case, you need to adjust your goal, such as changing the deadline or the essence of what you are moving towards.

In some cases, you need to remove or replace the goal so that you don't break under the weight of circumstances. If you've had a dramatic change in your life that has made a goal unattainable and impossible, it may be worth abandoning it or changing your focus to something equally meaningful.
